I Am Karate (SE)

Swedish pop duo I Am Karate, Erika Ahlström and Marta Pettersson, made their debut with a progressive electronic pop sound similar to a mix of Fever Ray and Robyn. One single musical encounter in 2014 and the girls knew they had to start a band. They grew up on different sides of the deep forest in Dalarna, Sweden, and had both longed to meet someone to share the melodies and lyrics flowing through their heads. I Am Karate was formed and Erika and Marta wrote and self-released the EP “I Am Karate” and two singles, “Elevate” and “Bitter”, and were nominated Best Unsigned Act in GAFFA Magazine 2016. The same year they signed with the major label Universal Music who released the EP “In Thin Air” and the single “Swayze” which got picked up for The Times Essential Tracks. After The Guardian’s interview, playing live on national television, and more than 1 million streams on Spotify everything went quiet. The girls locked themselves up in the studio and wrote their hearts out. Two years later I Am Karate returned with self-released “Expectations” in early 2018, written by I Am Karate and produced by the Norwegian producer Eirik Røland in collaboration with I Am Karate. At the end of the summer of 2018 they self-released their single News, written by I Am Karate, Karl Erkenborn and Gabriel Von Essen and produced by Eirik Røland in collaboration with Nanno Veen and I Am Karate. To finish of the year the duo released their self-written and produced track “Work It Out” December 12th.
